Sciatica pain is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is actually a bundle of nerves at the base of the spine from where it branches off through the buttocks muscles to the deep muscles at the back of the thighs down the legs to the foot. Sciatica generally flares up while bending over, running, sitting (especially driving) and during many other everyday movements, both active and passive.

Treatment:
- Diet therapy: No matter what the original cause of sciatica, muscle spasms and inflammation become part of the problem. A diet rich in magnesium can help relieve muscle spasms. Peanuts, almonds, cashew and other nuts are great sources of magnesium, as are beans, bananas and leafy green vegetables.
- Yoga therapy: Yogic asanas help strengthen the back muscles and relax the piriformis muscle which reduces stiffness and pressure against the sciatic nerve. It progresses from simple foundational asanas to specific yoga poses which goes a long way to drastically reduces the pain. - Kati Vasti : Kati Vasti is an intensely soothing massage treatment in which warmed, herbal oil is applied to the lower back area using a dam (container) made from dough. Kati Vasti relieves lower back pain and treats complaints affecting the abdomen.
- Herbal Steam Bath: Herbal steam bath or ayurvedic steam therapy is also beneficial for relieving pain, numbness and the tingling sensation of the back and legs.
- Abhyanga: Abhyanga is highly effective in the treatment of Sciatica. Abhyangam is a full body massage done with medicated herbal oils. This helps in stimulating the nerves and reduce the pain.
